One of our favourite projects of 2017 was working with Derry-based visual artist Sue Morris. Using the now decaying Nazareth House in Derry as her base and, in part, her inspiration Sue created art installations to explore how people with dementia interpret and engage with their surroundings as their perception becomes distorted. Under Sue’s direction we filmed and edited 4 pieces which were shown as part of the overall exhibition in Nazareth House on Culture Night 2017.
The films were subsequently exhibited in Lawrence Technological University

This was a really interesting project to work on particularly from an editing point of view. Usually our role is to engage, inform and entertain – in these films the aim was to portray monotony, discomfort and confusion.
DOING, REDOING, UNDOING
Doing, Redoing, Undoing is a four-channel video that explores the experience of aging and living with dementia in a care home setting.
Nazareth House in Derry, Northern Ireland, operated as a care home for the elderly for over 120 years before closing in 2013 following an unfavourable inspector’s report.
I spent a year photographing the building and working on a mixed-media site-specific installation, The Unfamiliar Familiar. Alongside this, I had been thinking of making a video documenting Nazareth House. Funding from the Arts Council of N.Ireland allowed me to bring in professional assistance with the filming and editing.
DNK Media Productions were a joy to work with.
They were quick to tune into the intention and drive behind the film offering creative solutions to some of the more difficult aspects of the filming. Responsive, dynamic and versatile – it was great to have them on board.
